Analysing Music Videos

Mise En Scene


Locations: Studio, Party and Outside. 



Costume and make up: Pixie Lott wears a black dress whilst dancing, and a pale pink dress when lying down on the floor. At the party, she wears a black jacket with a hat.Whilst riding on a bike outside, she wears a leather jacket, a skirt and long black knee length socks. You also spot her wearing a gold dress at one stage too. Make up is very natural throughout.



Props: Hats that Pixie Lott wears, stairs at the party. Sofa, and a iPod/Music Player that Pixie uses. 



Performance: Pixie dancing with a young male most of the way through, getting to party to find another young male, possibly an ex boyfriend. Lyrics suggest that she's getting over him. 


Lighting: Low cut lighting, natural outside light, coming in through windows. 


Colour palette: Soft when lying on the floor, and wearing pink dress. Dark at party and dancing. By having a dark colour palette at the party, it might suggest she had a dark past with her ex boyfriend, and didn't want to see him at the party. 

Camera techniques: Range of shots including establishing shots, at the party, close ups on the main singer, over the shoulder shot, two shots when dancing and medium shots when on the sofa. 


Edit techniques: Video has been edited and isn't a one shot video. You can tell where the cuts are and they are put to the beat of the song. 


Animation: -


Narrative: There is a clear narrative throughout the video, the lyrics Pixie Lott sings gives a clear narrative, and you can tell the song is about a break up. It talks about not getting over an ex boyfriend, even with another person, she still has feelings for him. 


Performance: The characters are lip syncing throughout the video and also perform to the camera. They play a role and keep it throughout the music video.


Representation of the artists and other groups: Representation is positive, Pixie is demonstrating a positive character. 

Intertextuality: There are certain elements of other Pixie Lott music videos in Broken Arrow.  

Link between visuals and lyric?


Lyric: 'He's the thorn in my flesh that I can't take out, he's stealing my breath when you're around'
Visual: Pixie looking upset, and with another guy. She still has feelings for her ex boyfriend, even though she is with another guy.
